CHAPTER 8

* * *

“I’m going to give that Jacob Jefferson a piece of my mind,” Bert snapped once Gabriel had moved on to talk to more of the congregation members of his church. He told Bert that administering to others was the best way for him to keep his mind off the day’s harrowing train of events.

Bert, on the other hand, was sure there was no way for her to stop thinking about how angry the whole thing was making her.

“That’s not going to solve anything,” Carla pointed out, giving Bert’s arm a gentle squeeze.

“Who does he think he is, accusing people willy-nilly like that?”

“Look, I don’t much like the man either, but he’s probably just a little shaken up about everything that has happened. If your shop was robbed, you might be jittery, too.”

“Well, I’d hope I wouldn’t go around accusing people.”

“He thinks he is doing what is right for his business.”

Bert squinted her eyes at her best friend. “When did you become the logical and even headed one?” she teased.

She smiled, clearly holding back a laugh. “When you get wild and angry, I sort of level out.”

“I’m not wild and angry,” she defended herself, trying to hold back a laugh of her own.

“The point is, if you want to talk to Jefferson, it’s better to wait until things have been ironed out a bit. He’ll be more level-headed and willing to talk—”

“Maybe.”

“And so will you,” she continued, giving her friend a poke in the shoulder.

Sighing, Bert let a smile come to her face. “Alright, alright. I get it. You’re right.”

“I am,” she beamed.

Bert rolled her eyes.

“It’s a sad business, isn’t it?” a woman asked, approaching them.

Bert recognized Mrs. Osborn from earlier.

“Yes, it is. I’m sure this is difficult for you, especially, seeing as Aniyah was in your congregation,” Bert said, keeping things light.

“Yes, she was a good friend to everyone, always willing to help. I hope you ladies don’t mind me coming over to talk like this, but sometimes it’s just easier . . .” her voice trailed off.

“To talk to someone you don’t know so personally?”

The woman offered a kind smile. “That’s right. Someone I know I won’t be seeing at my husband’s sermon later.”

“Is your husband administering to his congregation right now?” Carla asked.

“No, he headed back to the church to get ready for this afternoon’s meeting.”

“That makes sense. I wouldn’t be surprised if our own pastor did the same. I’m sure they both want to make slight modifications to fit with the day’s events.”

“Yes, I’m positive that’s what he is doing,” Mrs. Osborn admitted. “In these times of need is when my husband is at his best.”

“Were you close with Aniyah?” Bert asked.

“Well, I interacted with her on a weekly basis, if that’s what you mean. She was our organist. She had a real talent for music.”

“So I’ve heard.”

“She was a sweetheart, too, but occasionally she got carried away with her . . . stories,” she admitted, wringing her cold looking bare hands together. Bert knew that when she got nervous, her own hands froze.
